How to run a quiz night with a QR code
You read the questions out. Joining, answering and scoring are handled for you, from one phone and one QR code.
What you need
A BravoPin board, a screen that can open a web page (a smart TV, a Fire TV stick, a Chromecast, a laptop on HDMI), and your questions. Your guests need only the camera on their phone: no app and no account.
If you have not made a board yet, make it once and use it for every quiz night. Give it a name your regulars will recognise, and tick that it is a bar, restaurant, café or shop.
Write your questions
On your phone, open your board and press On screen, then Put something on the screen, and choose Quiz. Type or paste your questions into the one box: each question on its own line, its answers under it, and an empty line before the next question.
Put the right answer first. You do not have to mark it, and the screen mixes the answers up for you. If you would rather mark it yourself, put a star in front of the right one. Choose 30 seconds, a minute, or until you show the answer, give the quiz a name if you like, and save it. The page that opens lists every question with its right answer ticked, so you can check them before the night.
Run the night
Everything below happens on your phone. One button is always the next thing to press.
- Press Start the quiz. The screen asks every table to join and shows a square to scan.
- Each table picks one phone, scans the square and joins as one team. Your phone shows how many teams are playing.
- Press Show question 1. It appears on the screen and on the phones, and each table taps an answer. They can change it until the time is up.
- When the time runs out, press Show the answer. The right answer appears, and the button becomes Show question 2.
- After the last question, press Finish the quiz. The top three teams go up on the screen.
Make it a proper night
While a question is up, the screen shows only the question, and the room’s own lines come back when you show the answer. If you would rather keep the room’s lines on screen all the time, choose that under More in the quiz’s settings.
Give the room a reason to write between rounds. Put a prize on for the hour, so the best line of the night wins a dessert or the next round, or press Announcement for a sentence in big letters, such as the date of the next quiz.
Good to know
Every line a guest writes is checked before it reaches the screen. The tone check, which is on when you tick that the board is a bar, restaurant, café or shop and which you can switch off or on again in the board’s settings, is there to keep out lines that are unkind, hostile or selling something.
Two teams level on points are separated by who answered faster, and nobody has to make an account to play.
